Orthodontics is a dentistry specialty that addresses the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of mal-positioned teeth and jaws.
Crooked teeth impair the aesthetics of the face and affect the possibility of increased food traps between the teeth, thus increasing tooth decay and the development of periodontal disease.
The best preventive measure that intercepts the occurrence of caries in places that are not accessible for cleaning is orthodontic therapy. Orthodontic therapy improves the function of chewing and improves the aesthetics of patients, and there are also positive psychological changes in them. Orthodontic therapy is not a luxury but a need that should not be overlooked. As a rule, the therapy is carried out in adolescence, but it is possible at any other age. There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment.

Mobile braces were once the primary therapeutic tool, and today they are mainly used in milk (deciduous teeth) and mixed dentition. Mobile appliances consist of an acrylic base and wires fixed to the teeth, wired active elements, and expansion screws that create orthodontic force.
The patient can put in and out the mobile braces by himself, and the orthodontic forces act as long as the patient wears them in his mouth. Wearing is mainly planned at night and during the time the patient spends at home.
In various activities that involve social interaction, the braces are usually not worn. This avoids social and aesthetic barriers, which is especially important in patients in puberty and adolescence. Removing the prosthesis from the mouth allows for better oral hygiene than in patients who wear fixed braces and where oral hygiene must be at a much higher level.
The main disadvantage of mobile braces is the ability to remove them, which means that time of wearing the prosthesis is under the complete control of the patient. Following this, patients often wear it for not long enough, or due to possible discomfort, they avoid wearing it. This is why mobile braces therapy depends entirely on the patient's self-discipline and awareness.
Fixed braces consist of metal or porcelain brackets glued to the teeth and a metal arch that connects the teeth allowing them to move and straighten.
They are intended for all patients who have a problem with the bite and improperly placed teeth that affect the aesthetic appearance. The time of wearing fixed braces depends on the severity of the orthodontic anomaly but usually lasts 18 months with regular check-ups. In patients who follow all the recommendations given by the orthodontist, wearing can be shorter than mentioned - about 12 months.

It is an alternative to classic fixed braces and is a comfortable, invisible orthodontic therapy for all patients who, for any reason, do not want to wear a fixed brace.
It consists of a series of "invisible" aligners customized for each patient , intimately rest on the teeth, and are designed to gradually move the teeth to the desired position. With the "Invisalign" method of straightening teeth, light and medium-severe orthodontic anomalies are solved.
The procedure itself consists of photographing the teeth; in the laboratory, a 3-D model is made with a CT scanner and based on that model, a simulation of the desired movements of the teeth from the initial to the final position is made.
Based on that, simulation aligners are customed to fit the patient's mouth. Aligners are usually changed every two weeks and, the movement of the teeth is gentle and gradual and are worn at least 20 hours a day, except when eating and brushing the teeth.
Advantages of the "Invisalign" system compared to fixed dentures are that they are almost invisible, so the aesthetic moment is perfect. The possibility of removing them from the mouth and better oral hygiene is why patients perceive them as practical, comfortable, and discreet (because of their invisibility).
The disadvantage is that they do not solve more severe orthodontic anomalies, skeletal malocclusions, and of course, the high cost of the treatment itself.
It is never too late to correct protruded or retruded teeth, separate teeth, closing gaps created by tooth extraction, or eliminating the need for prosthetic replacements or implants.
In some cases, orthodontic treatment precedes implant placement. If a lot of time has passed since the loss of the teeth, the adjacent teeth bend or move, so there is often not enough space for implants. For teeth that are bent or not in function due to incorrect position and food traps, it is necessary to conduct orthodontic therapy to correct the bent teeth and make sufficient space for implants.

New modern prosthetic orthodontics and new methods of work significantly shorten the treatment. Orthodontic treatment lasts 30-50% shorter, and the aesthetics and function that are achieved are at a very high level.
Retention or the procedure of preserving the result of orthodontic therapy is a significant part of any orthodontic therapy. The purpose of retention is to keep the teeth in the desired position after treatment with orthodontic braces. The teeth change their position throughout life; therefore, maintaining the orthodontic treatment result requires discipline from the patient in using retainers and good cooperation with the orthodontist.
There are fixed and mobile retainers, and the time wearing them can last many years. The length of the retention period depends on the nature of the initial anomaly, age, type of therapy, and the outcome achieved at the end of treatment.
Retainers are generally adapted so that their shape and fixation in the mouth would not interfere with speech, chewing, and oral hygiene.
A common type of retainer is a retainer made of a special orthodontic wire fixed to the inner surface of the lower front teeth, thus preventing the re-curvature of the teeth. Another type of retainer is a removable retainer made of transparent material. The removable appliance that straightens the teeth can also serve as a retainer, and eventually when the teeth are straightened, it can be worn for a long time.
